The Korat is one of the oldest cat breeds which comes from Thailand/Southeastasia.
Its beauty has first been described - in old thai documents - during the Ayundhaya-Period (1350-1767) as followed:
The cat ma-led has a colour like doklao, the coat is soft with roots like clouds and tips like silver, the eyes shimmer like dewdrops on a lotus.
Ma-led and doklao are fruits that grow in Thailand and looks similar in colour to the coat of a Korat cat.
The thai name of a Korat is Si-Sawat. In this name the word Si stands for Colour and the word Sawat for Luck and Wealth. The cat symbolises the ideal of life. With her bluegray coat she seems like clouds which bring the rain to earth. Her silverish shining is a indication for prosperity and wealth. Her eyes finally, which has been described by poets as shimmer like dewdrops on a lotus are symbolizing fertility and growth. The Korat has always counted as a bearer of glad tidings to the natives. She was not for sale and given away as a present to highly respectable personalities on special occasions only. For this purposes she has been adored and protected and therefore her breed specific characteristics have been unchanged until today.
Her physical type is lithe and muscular, the legs of average lenght and slim with a remarkable leg power. Striking are the big round, goldgreen shining eyes. The head is heartshaped and the profil runs from the forehead to the muzzle via a lion-type nose. The big - high on the head positioned - ears have a rounded tip. The silvergrey coat is short to medium length, shining and without any undercoat close fitting. The lighter coat-tipping grants the beautiful silver shimmer, which is easy to spot on the parts of the body with short coat like the muzzle, ears, paws.
The Korat is extraordinary good-natured and develops - with appropriate owning - an distinct relationship to the person she relates most closely to. She moves with supple grace and elegance. Her big gold-green eyes shine with friendlyness and attention. She is intelligent, very nosy and playful. She needs lots of attention and care. Due to her liveliness and playfulness she is extremely suitable for families with children.
